A trip to Phnom Penh

During the week of 19th to 24th March, students of IB Year 1 went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia for a service trip. This trip gave them the opportunity to volunteer at the “Free the Bears” Cambodia sanctuary. Students have also immersed themselves in local Cambodian culture, trying new dishes, visiting temples and markets. They also got the chance to learn more about an important and poignant aspect of Cambodia’s history through museum visits. Without a doubt, the trip provided the students with valuable experiences and memories!

The students visited the COPE Museum at Laos and learnt about the history. They headed to Luang Prabang, UNESCO World Heritage City and the former capital of Laos. The 2.5 hours remarkable train journey brought them to the mountainous town which was an architectural ensemble of Lao traditional urban architecture blended with French colonial touch. They headed further to their final destination to Ban Nong Jong village after crossing the Mekong River and a 1.5 hours trek which they participated in the world volunteer house-building project. The students also prepared mudbricks and constructed walls for dormitories. It was a very meaningful learning experience for the students.

Ecosystem Exploration @ Pasir Ris Mangrove Forest

This term, our Grade 2, 3 and 4 students became naturalists and explorers as part of their UOS studies visiting Pasir Ris Mangroves to experience first-hand habitat, its residents and the positive and negative influence human activity has on the environment. Highlights of the day included spotting the many residents (just to reassure you contrary to the stories you may have been told there were no alligators, anacondas or Komodo dragons). The intrepid explorers then enjoyed picnicking in the park and team sports to end the day. This is a great example of classroom without walls where learning takes place on so many levels. If you haven’t visited Pasir Ris Mangroves we encourage you to ask your children to take you and teach you about this habitat.

Artrageous Exhibition

“Mixed Media Piece” exhibited at ARTRAGEOUS EXHIBITION

There is a wealth of evidence that the Arts challenge us with different points of view, compel us to empathise with others, and give us the opportunity to reflect on our actions. Enrichment opportunities allow children and young people to explore the Arts in a different environment to the curriculum. Having structured, additional time to focus on the arts will only lead to skills development and discipline which can be translated back in the classroom.

A glimpse into our proud Grade 5 student Laranya Bera’s mixed media piece exhibited at the ARTRAGEOUS Exhibition at the Visual Arts Centre which received great appreciation from acclaimed artists, only strengthens our belief in the benefits of the Visual Arts in developing articulate thinkers. Good job Laranya Bera!

February 2023

The Peoples Association of Singapore organised the Chingay Parade which took place this year on February 3rd and 4th 2023 to commemorate the Year of the Rabbit.

To showcase the vibrant, multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan cultures of Singapore, the theme this year was ‘Embrace Tomorrow’. Approximately 10,000 local and international performers were involved in the event. Yohaan @ ABWA Infinity

After winning a zonal round against 450 teams, three groups (Aditya, Ridhima and I; Vivek, Anvay, and Dhruv; Ahan, Yashvir, and Abhyuday) from NPSI qualified for the finals of the 9th edition of the Infinity Maths Competition in Mumbai (by the Aditya Birla World Academy in association with BITS Pilani and the University of Waterloo). We had a chance to qualify for “quizzitch”, a head-to-head showdown among the top 5 teams; or for the “bulb your ideas” finals, where 5 teams would have to present the posters they had made to a panel of expert judges. Against all odds, my team with Aditya, Ridhima, and I, were the only ones at NPSI to make it to the Top 5 in the Senior category, and we steeled ourselves for the hardest test of our mathematical skill yet: quizzitch. Seated in front of hundreds of students and teachers, we answered questions from every mathematical discipline, keeping our wits about us and our buzzers in hand. At the end, all the points were tallied, and we were barely edged out by the school in third place. We returned to our seats with a spring in our steps, proud of our achievements. To our surprise, my team had again qualified for the “bulb your ideas” finals, and we got on stage to present our posters as best we could, bringing out the intricacies of the work we had done.

Amazingly, nearly all NPSI members had achieved a placement in an event. Vivek, Yashvir, and I had all gotten Bronze medals in the Clash of Mathematicians round, while Aditya and Dhruv had received Silver medals in the same. Ahan managed to get Gold medal, proving to be one of the best mathematicians in his category. Meanwhile in the “bulb your ideas” finals, the advanced team managed to get silver, and my team pulled through with first prize, beating all of the other senior schools!

Celebrating Kashmir @75

It was an enriching day on the 4th of February at the Indian High Commission, Singapore for our students to witness ‘A Slice of Paradise in Singapore: Celebrating Kashmir @75’. Students interacted with musicians and learned about the various Kashmiri instruments like the ‘santoor’ and ‘rabab’. A stunning photography exhibition highlighting Kashmir’s culture and landscapes virtually transported the viewer to Kashmir. Students were also able to observe papier mâché and calligraphy and try their own hand at these traditional art forms. A big thank you to the Indian High Commission, Singapore for this amazing experience which allowed the students to learn new things about, and gain insight into, Kashmir’s unique culture.

NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC)

NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC), held annually, engages high school and university students all around the world in the next stage of human space exploration.

Teams competing in the challenge are expected to design and construct a human-powered rover that can traverse challenging terrain. The rover will be tested on obstacles that simulate conditions encountered on the lunar surface. Teams are also expected to design and construct a task tool capable of collecting liquid samples. Similar to the Apollo missions, the team must collect liquid samples using the task tool as they traverse the obstacle course.

Out of the several teams that submitted their design proposal to NASA HERC, only 61 teams got shortlisted to take part in the finals. Out of these 61 teams, only 15 are from high schools, and NPSI team named “Reach Rovers” is proud to be one of them and the only one from Southeast Asia. "Reach Rovers" is led by Pranav Bharathwaj (9 IGCSE) and comprises 13 other members. Congratulations to the team!

Entrepreneurship Day
Entrepreneurship Day

Each year, students from eighth-grade team up to sell goods on Entrepreneurship Day. The entrepreneurship day was held on 8th December this year. Entrepreneurship day was a shopper's delight, from bookmarks, storybooks, and Christmas goods to recreational centres. With the help of music, lights, and beautiful decorations the usual classrooms were transformed into Fair-Value Mall and Christmas Wonderland.

This event serves as a great opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and develop the necessary skills to survive in the ever-evolving business environment. Students learn basic financial skills such as managing costs. Apart from this, students also got to learn about different marketing strategies and apply them to their stalls.

From coming up with the right prices for the goods to attracting customers with posters, decorations and Christmas carols, the event allowed students to recognize the skills and values that are needed for becoming an entrepreneur such as teamwork, resilience, and patience. This event was an exciting learning experience wherein students got an insight into the functioning of a business whilst being able to contribute the profits to charity.

A unique feature of the IB Diploma Programme, the exhibition is part of the assessment and programme requirements. A fantastic platform for IB Year 2 students to present their perspectives on questions such as: “What is a good justification for a knowledge claim?”, “Are some types of knowledge more open to interpretation than others?”, “How far is certainty available?” among others. Teachers, parents, and students from other grades have attended the exhibition, and they were quite fascinated by the range of ideas presented! It was an exciting three days for the students!

Aanya Rao -The Diana Award recipient
The Diana Award 2022

Congratulations to Aanya Rao (IBDP Year 1, 2022-24)! She is one of the recipients of “The Diana Award 2022". One of the highest globally recognised awards a young person can achieve for social action or humanitarian efforts and empowers young people to make positive change! The award established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, is given out by the charity of the same name and has the support of both her sons, The Duke of Cambridge, and The Duke of Sussex.

In 2018, Aanya was accompanying her relative to his dialysis sessions, when she was struck by the monochromatic feel in the dialysis centre. In June 2020, Aanya founded ‘Art:Connect’, a student-led initiative connecting the student art community with residents and patients of healthcare centres. Their philosophy is underpinned by the slogan, “Art can, and will, heal the world”. In the last 18 months, the organisation has grown to 40+ volunteers from schools across Singapore, aiming to showcase the immense talent of young people and their art for the good of the community, and leverage the “healing power of art” to help patients and healthcare workers through their most difficult times.
